The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is encouraging its members and allies to attend the 2026 AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil & Human Rights Conference in Baltimore, scheduled for January 15-18, 2026.
The event’s theme, “Honoring Our History – Fighting for Our Future,” focuses on connecting the labor movement’s past with ongoing efforts to advance civil and human rights. Organizers emphasize the relationship between labor and civil-rights movements, stating that understanding history is key to shaping future actions.
According to IAM, “This conference is an important platform for dialogue and action at the intersection of labor rights and civil/human rights. It celebrates Dr. King’s enduring legacy while setting a course for collective strength in 2026.”
Attendees will participate in discussions about current challenges such as attacks on collective-bargaining rights, threats to democracy, voting rights issues, and economic justice. The program includes workshops and breakout sessions designed to provide practical tools for organizing within communities and workplaces. The conference aims to serve both union members and leaders by offering opportunities to develop skills and build alliances.
AFL-CIO has named Alex Rias as its new Director of Civil, Human, and Women’s Rights. He will oversee the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil and Human Rights Conference.
The event will take place at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor at 401 W. Pratt St., Baltimore, Maryland. Organizers recommend booking accommodations early due to high demand; the negotiated rate is $219 per night. Programming starts on Thursday afternoon, January 15, 2026, with limited hotel availability on January 14.
Registration for the conference is now open.
