The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has temporarily closed the foot bridge at Birdseye Hollow State Forest in the Sanford Lake Recreation Area, located in the town of Bath, Steuben County. The closure follows a recent inspection by DEC staff that found significant structural deterioration requiring immediate attention.

According to the DEC, “A recent DEC inspection revealed significant structural deterioration, necessitating the bridge’s closure for public safety. DEC staff is working to thoroughly assess the extent of the damage and develop a plan for repairs or replacement of the bridge.”

The temporary closure affects walking access between the Sanford Lake boat launch and camping area and campsite 7 near Kettle Road. However, all locations within the Sanford Lake Recreation Areas can still be reached from either Kettle or Round Lake Roads.

“DEC will announce the bridge reopening upon completion of the maintenance work. Contact DEC’s Bath suboffice at 607-776-2165 for more information,” according to officials.
