The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 3 is inviting residents to take part in “Wildlife Day” on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The event will be held at the Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center in Dutchess County.
“Wildlife Day provides a perfect opportunity to participate in wildlife conservation service projects and educational workshops across the state, celebrating New York’s diverse wildlife and habitats,” according to the DEC. The initiative is organized with Parks and Trails New York and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. It is part of the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days Campaign, which aims to promote year-round stewardship through themed events highlighting outdoor recreation opportunities.
Volunteer registration for Wildlife Day is now open. The DEC encourages people to join local efforts focused on cleanup, enhancement, or education.
At Stony Kill Farm, volunteers can help clean up the Pollinator Garden after summer activities by weeding and mulching. Following this work, DEC Environmental Program Specialists Tom and Erin will lead a birding program where participants can identify bird species attracted to the gardens and nearby habitats.
After Wildlife Day activities conclude at 11 a.m., attendees are invited to stay for Harvest Fest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., also at Stony Kill Farm. The festival features homemade soups, crafts, vendors, food options, as well as barn and livestock tours.
Participants are advised to bring water, snacks, sturdy closed-toed shoes, and may bring their own gardening gloves or binoculars if preferred; some equipment will also be provided on site. All ages are welcome at the event.
Those interested in joining can register through Parks & Trails NY.
