The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has opened its annual Arbor Day Poster contest, inviting photographers and artists to submit images that highlight the importance and beauty of trees. The contest is organized by DEC’s Urban and Community Forestry Program as part of efforts to celebrate the role trees play in communities, nature, and the environment.

Commissioner Amanda Lefton stated, “Trees are powerful allies in building resilient communities, ecosystems, and a healthier future. As we work together towards our goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033, this poster competition is a chance for New Yorkers to share their vision of the beauty and benefits of trees and to inspire others to celebrate, plant, and protect them.”

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball added, “Trees contribute to the beautiful scenery that makes up New York’s landscapes and to our agricultural story by providing us with the first crop of the season of sweet maple syrup. They also power our wood products industry, clean our air, and improve water quality. The annual Arbor Day Poster Contest is a wonderful celebration of New York’s trees and their importance to the daily lives of New Yorkers and visitors alike. I encourage everyone to take part in the Arbor Day Poster Contest and help us showcase their significance.”

This year’s theme is “Trees for the Future.” Submissions should use original photos or artwork to show connections between people and trees, emphasize planting for future generations, or illustrate how trees help communities adapt to climate change.

Entries will be accepted until November 30, 2025. The winning image will appear on the 2026 Arbor Day poster distributed statewide at events such as Arbor Day celebrations, schools, libraries, conservation councils, and at venues like the New York State Fair.

The contest is sponsored by several organizations including DEC itself; other sponsors are the Department of Agriculture and Markets; Empire State Forestry Foundation; New York State Arborists Association; and Sylvamo North America. Entries must feature trees located within New York State. Only one entry per person is allowed.

Full contest rules can be found on DEC’s website or through contacting local forestry offices.

For more information about participating or obtaining previous years’ posters while supplies last, interested individuals can visit DEC’s website or call 518-402-9428.
