The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 5 is inviting volunteers to take part in “Wildlife Day” on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The event will be held at Rogers Rock Campground in Warren County and Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretive Center in Franklin County.
Wildlife Day offers participants the chance to join wildlife conservation service projects and educational workshops. According to the DEC, the day is designed to celebrate New York’s variety of wildlife and habitats. It is organized with support from Parks and Trails New York and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation as part of the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days Campaign. This campaign promotes stewardship throughout the year by organizing themed days that encourage people to care for outdoor recreation areas.
Volunteer registration for Wildlife Day is open. Residents are encouraged to join local cleanups, enhancement efforts, or educational events.
At Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretive Center, a butterfly house take-down activity will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., where volunteers can help prepare the butterfly meadow for winter. All ages are welcome to participate in this event.
At Rogers Rock Campground, a nature hike up Rogers Rock Slide is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., focusing on the history of the area and its wildlife species. This hike covers about one mile and includes some steep sections; it is suitable for those aged 13 and older.
Participants are advised to bring water, appropriate footwear, layered clothing for weather conditions, rain gear if needed, and work gloves where applicable. Registration details can be found through Parks & Trails NY.
