The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 8 is inviting the public to participate in “Wildlife Day” on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The event will take place at Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve and is organized with the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.

“Wildlife Day provides a perfect opportunity to participate in wildlife conservation service projects and educational workshops across the state, celebrating New York’s diverse wildlife and habitats,” according to the DEC. The event is also held in partnership with Parks and Trails New York, as well as the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. It is part of the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days Campaign, which promotes year-round stewardship by offering themed volunteer days focused on maintaining outdoor recreation areas.

Those interested can register for Wildlife Day now. The program encourages residents to join local efforts involving cleanup activities, habitat enhancement, or educational programs.

At Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve, volunteers will work alongside staff from Montezuma Audubon and DEC to collect native seeds. These seeds will later be planted within the Montezuma Wetlands Complex to help improve wildlife habitat in the area. The preserve covers 576 acres and supports various animal and plant species.

Participants are asked to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes—preferably waterproof—as they may need to go off-trail into tall vegetation for seed collection. All necessary equipment will be provided by organizers. Depending on weather conditions, sun or rain protection may be advisable.

There are no running water facilities available at the site; attendees are advised to use restroom facilities beforehand although a porta-potty will be available in the parking lot. Lunch will be provided by Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex. Registration should be completed at least 24 hours before attending. The event is open to individuals aged 13 and up.

For more information or to register, interested parties can contact Cassidy Attanasio at [email protected] or (315) 365-3588 ext. 201.
