A new workforce training center is planned for Hudson Valley Community College, following a $40 million investment announced by Governor Kathy Hochul. The Applied Technology Education Center (ATEC), a 125,000-square-foot facility with a total project cost of $64 million, is scheduled to open in 2027. The center will focus on preparing New Yorkers for jobs in fields such as building systems, automotive and transportation technologies, renewable energy, and semiconductor manufacturing.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of workforce readiness as new manufacturing opportunities emerge in New York State. “We’re training New Yorkers in the jobs of the future — investing in an economy that lifts up communities in the Hudson Valley and beyond,” said Governor Hochul. “With billions of dollars in manufacturing coming to our state, it’s critical that we ensure the workforce is ready to meet this moment and move our state into a new era of innovation.”
The facility will include specialized laboratories and classrooms equipped with modern industry tools. It aims to address worker shortages in applied technology and skilled trades by providing relevant training to thousands over the next decade.
Hope Knight, President, CEO and Commissioner of Empire State Development, stated: “Governor Hochul’s strategic investments in workforce development are building the infrastructure to ensure that New York State has the skilled workers to meet the needs of growing industries with good-paying jobs. This state-of-the-art center at Hudson Valley Community College represents the latest step in our efforts and will provide training for high-demand jobs that will grow the state’s talent pipeline and strengthen our economy.”
The ATEC initiative complements SUNY Reconnect, a program offering free community college tuition, fees, books, and supplies for eligible adult learners pursuing degrees in high-demand sectors.
