The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) announced the passing of Tom O’Heron, a retired IAM Collective Bargaining Director. O’Heron, who was 69 years old, had a career with the union that spanned more than 46 years.
O’Heron joined IAM Local 21 in 1978 after training as a machinist and working at the Trane Company in Wisconsin. His commitment to workplace fairness led him into leadership roles, including Directing Business Representative for District 66. He later served as Collective Bargaining Coordinator and then as Collective Bargaining Director at the IAM International level before retiring in 2016.
During his tenure as Director, O’Heron played an important role in negotiating contracts for IAM members, focusing on securing fair wages, benefits, and protections. His efforts are credited with strengthening the union over several decades.
“Tom O’Heron was a true trade unionist whose work shaped our union and improved the lives of countless working families,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “He will be remembered for his steady leadership at the bargaining table, his lifelong dedication to fairness, and his unwavering commitment to solidarity.”
Outside of his professional life, O’Heron was involved in community activities such as coaching youth sports and participating in church service. He was known for supporting his family’s activities and serving as Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
The IAM expressed condolences to O’Heron’s family, friends, and colleagues.
