IAM members Richard Turner and Melissa McRonney-Apaw were among 20 participants in the recent Leadership II class at the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ (IAM) Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. Both Turner and McRonney-Apaw discussed their backgrounds and current roles as union representatives and educators within their respective locals.
The week-long training focused on understanding legislative processes to help union members better advocate for workers’ rights in Washington, D.C. The program highlighted the need for unions to engage in lobbying efforts, noting that companies already do so to pursue their own interests.
Participants also addressed topics such as ethical considerations, member protection, and building solidarity within the union. The program was described as an empowering experience that prepares attendees to be more effective leaders.
“Leadership II participants also discussed ethical considerations, protecting members, and fostering solidarity, underscoring the empowering and unifying experience of the program, which equips them to be more impactful leaders.”
