The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is calling on the U.S. Senate to pass the Protect America’s Workforce Act, which seeks to restore collective bargaining rights for federal employees. The union’s appeal comes in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order from March 27, which ended collective bargaining for federal unions.

IAM International President Brian Bryant has addressed both chambers of Congress, urging lawmakers to support the legislation. “IAM International President Brian Bryant sent this letterto members of the U.S. House of Representatives and this letterto members of the Senate, urging their support for the Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R. 2550), a bipartisan piece of legislation aimed at restoring collective bargaining rights of federal workers.”

The Protect America’s Workforce Act was introduced in the House by Representatives Jared Golden (D-ME) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and has garnered bipartisan backing.

“IAM Union strongly supports the Protect America’s Workforce Act for restoring collective bargaining rights to the nation’s federal workforce,” said IAM representatives.

Federal workers play an important role in serving Americans and deserve workplace protections that come with collective bargaining, according to IAM. “Federal workers are essential, and they’re committed to serving the American people. These workers deserve the right of collective bargaining, which provides protections in the workplace and better service to the public, just to name a few benefits.”

The IAM represents thousands of federal employees through its affiliation with organizations such as the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM), which advocates for approximately 110,000 federal workers across the country.
