Employment in Maine’s Cumberland County remained steady from March 2024 to March 2025, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mark J. Maggi, Acting Regional Commissioner, stated that employment in York County declined by 1.2 percent over the year.

In March 2025, Cumberland County had higher employment numbers (188,100) compared to York County (73,800). These two counties together represented 41.6 percent of all covered employment in Maine. On a national scale, the largest 372 counties accounted for 73.4 percent of total covered employment across the United States.

The average weekly wage in Cumberland increased by 1.5 percent during the year, reaching $1,460. Both Cumberland and York counties had average weekly wages below the national average of $1,589.

Data for Maine’s smaller counties—those with fewer than 75,000 employees—showed that all reported average weekly wages below the national figure. Sagadahoc County recorded the highest average weekly wage among these smaller counties at $1,294, while Piscataquis had the lowest at $903.

Out of all 16 counties in Maine, two reported average weekly wages under $1,000; three were between $1,000 and $1,074; six ranged from $1,075 to $1,149; and five had wages at or above $1,150.

QCEW data for states was included in this release as well.
