New Hampshire job openings decrease while labor market remains tight

New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that New Hampshire had 34,000 job openings in July 2025, down from 37,000 in June. The job openings rate in the state was 4.6 percent in July, compared to 5.0 percent the previous month. Nationally, the job openings rate stood at 4.3 percent in July and 4.4 percent in June.

Acting Regional Commissioner Mark J. Maggi stated, “The job openings rate in New Hampshire was 4.6 percent in July and 5.0 percent in the previous month.” He added that the national figures were slightly lower for both months.

The ratio of unemployed persons per job opening in New Hampshire was reported at 0.7 for July. This means there were fewer unemployed individuals than available jobs, indicating a tight labor market within the state. Across the country, 32 states and the District of Columbia recorded ratios below the national average of 1.0 unemployed person per job opening; 13 states had higher ratios and five matched the national measure.

In terms of hiring activity, New Hampshire saw 24,000 hires and 26,000 separations during July, compared to June’s figures of 25,000 hires and 25,000 separations. Over the past year ending in July, monthly averages for hires and separations were both close to these recent numbers.

Of those who left their jobs in July, about 14,000 did so voluntarily (quits), while approximately 10,000 lost their jobs through layoffs or discharges—similar to trends seen over recent months.

The next release of state-level Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) estimates is scheduled for October 22, 2025.

JOLTS provides insights into labor demand and workforce turnover by combining several sources such as sample surveys and employment statistics programs.

Definitions used by JOLTS include:
– Job openings are positions open on the last business day of each reference month.
– Hires count all new additions to payrolls during a month.
– Separations cover all types of departures from payrolls within a given period—including quits and layoffs/discharges—though only major categories are published at the state level.
