The New York State Department of Health has launched PrEP Aware Week, an annual campaign aimed at increasing awareness and use of HIV prevention methods. Running from October 19 to October 25, the initiative this year is themed “PrEP Revolution,” focusing on health equity, self-determination, and visibility for those at risk of HIV.
“PrEP Revolution is a powerful theme built on the foundation that access to HIV prevention is a right that allows everyone across generations, identities and communities to make informed choices about their own health,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. “PrEP is up to 99% effective when used appropriately at preventing the transmission of HIV and is an important tool in accomplishing our goal to end the HIV epidemic.”
Funded by the Department’s AIDS Institute, PrEP Aware Week includes both in-person and virtual events intended to educate high-priority populations about Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a routine option for preventing HIV infection. The campaign addresses ongoing disparities in PrEP usage across New York State by ensuring all individuals are aware that PrEP is available and effective regardless of age, identity, or background.
This year’s campaign features eight ambassadors representing diverse communities across the state. The group includes the youngest ambassador yet at age 17 and the oldest at age 78, reflecting six decades of lived experience. In addition to Spanish-speaking ambassadors, there is also representation for Korean speakers with campaign materials available in both languages.
A social media toolkit has been developed for individuals or organizations interested in promoting PrEP benefits. This resource provides digital content, hashtags, and ready-to-use posts designed to expand outreach efforts.
According to the Department of Health, PrEP reduces sexual transmission of HIV by up to 99 percent when taken as directed. For people who are HIV negative but at risk for infection, PrEP offers several options: daily or on-demand pills as well as injections administered every two or six months. Those considering PrEP are encouraged to consult with healthcare providers about which method suits them best.
Coverage for PrEP-related services—including appointments, lab tests, medication—is provided through Medicaid and most insurance plans. Medicare beneficiaries can also access these services without out-of-pocket costs if their provider accepts Medicare Part B. Additional support may be available through drug manufacturer assistance programs or the state’s own PrEP Assistance Program (PrEP-AP).
Recent updates from the New York State Clinical Guidelines Program include new oral dosing strategies and recommendations for integrating injectable forms of PrEP into clinical practice. The guidelines highlight shared decision-making between patients and clinicians regarding available options.
HIV self-test kits are also accessible; residents can check eligibility via an online survey for free home delivery.
In 2024, Governor Hochul signed legislation eliminating barriers such as insurer discrimination against those prescribed PrEP, prior authorization requirements for coverage, and copayments related to PrEP medications.
The AIDS Institute continues its commitment toward ending transmission while improving care for those living with HIV or other related conditions within New York’s diverse communities.
