A statement was released by New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald in response to a shooting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta that resulted in the death of a police officer. The incident also endangered public health workers at the facility.
Dr. McDonald expressed condolences to those affected, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the senseless and tragic shooting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, which claimed the life of a police officer and put our public health colleagues in harm’s way.
“Our hearts are with the loved ones of the young father who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, protecting those who serve the public good.
“It is heartbreaking that individuals who dedicate their lives to protecting and improving the health of others face not only criticism and scrutiny, but also the threat of physical violence.
“As Commissioner, I reaffirm our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health of all New Yorkers and to ensuring both the physical safety and mental well-being of our dedicated employees.
“In this difficult moment, let us stand united and, most importantly, look out for one another.”
The event highlights ongoing concerns about workplace safety for those working in public health roles across government agencies.
