As the holiday season approaches, New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald has issued a statement urging residents to take precautions to maintain their health and the well-being of those around them.
Dr. McDonald emphasized the importance of following public health guidance during gatherings and celebrations. “As New Yorkers gather with loved ones to celebrate the holiday season, I encourage everyone to take simple steps to protect their health and the health of those around them. The holidays are a time for connection and community—and with a few thoughtful precautions, we can help make sure those moments stay joyful,” he said.
He advised residents to keep up with recommended vaccinations, including those for flu and COVID-19, as well as to practice good hand hygiene and avoid attending events if feeling unwell. “I urge New Yorkers to stay up to date on recommended vaccinations, including flu and COVID-19, practice good hand hygiene and stay home if you’re feeling sick. If you’re traveling or hosting gatherings, consider taking extra measures to protect older adults, young children and anyone who may be at higher risk,” Dr. McDonald stated.
He concluded by encouraging collective action: “Together, we can reduce the spread of illness and ensure a safer, healthier season for everyone. Wishing you and your loved one’s warmth, laughter and moments that make your heart sparkle this holiday season.”
