The New York State Department of Health has recognized local public health department workers across the state by adding them to the Public Health Works! Honor Roll. This recognition highlights their role in protecting public health.
Established in 2007, the Public Health Works! Honor Roll aims to acknowledge the local public health workforce as a key factor in improving health outcomes for residents of New York.
“Local public health workers are essential to maintaining healthy communities,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. “The success of public health initiatives depends on the dedication of workers providing care and education in the community. We honor their commitment to improving the health of all New Yorkers.”
Each year, commissioners and directors from local health departments are invited to nominate individuals or teams who have demonstrated exceptional service in their agencies.
The Department relies on 57 local health departments, along with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, to deliver core services such as communicable disease control, chronic disease prevention, community health assessment, environmental health measures, and emergency preparedness and response. The efforts of these employees ensure that these essential services reach communities throughout New York.
