NYSUT President Melinda Person has issued a statement following reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and related activities in communities and schools across New York state.
Person said, “When immigration enforcement intrudes on school communities, it tears at the very fabric of public education. Every family should feel safe and secure in fully participating in their children’s education.
When parents are afraid to attend school events, volunteer in classrooms, or even drop their children off at school, we all lose. This is not the America our public schools were built to serve.”
The union’s response comes as educators and families express concern about the impact of federal immigration actions on students’ ability to participate fully in educational life.
