The Simons Center for Geometry and Physics (SCGP) is set to open an exhibition titled “100 Years of Quantum Mechanics” on October 9. The event will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. in the Simons Center Gallery and SCGP lobby, followed by a lecture at 5:30 p.m. in the Della Pietra Family Auditorium.
The guest lecture, “God Plays Dice with the World: The Story of Quantum Mechanics,” will be delivered by Giuseppe Mussardo, a professor of theoretical physics at SISSA in Trieste, Italy. Mussardo is known for his work in quantum field theory and statistical mechanics, as well as his expertise in integrable systems. He has authored several books on science and its history, including “The ABC’s of Science” and “God Plays Dice with the World.” In 2017, he was appointed to the Kramers Chair at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Utrecht, Netherlands, and was elected to l’Accademica del Disegno e delle Arti in Italy in 2023.
The exhibition is curated by Lorraine Walsh, SCGP Art Director, through the Simons Center Art and Outreach Program. It examines both the early development of quantum theory and ongoing research efforts. According to organizers, it highlights how quantum mechanics has become central to modern physics and has influenced technology and innovation.
UNESCO has declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology to mark a century since quantum mechanics was established.
