New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli has commented on the recent shutdown of the federal government, highlighting its impact on New York and its residents.

In his statement, DiNapoli emphasized the wide-ranging effects of a prolonged government shutdown. “A federal government shutdown has painful consequences for our state. Prolonged shutdowns hurt the economy, disrupt critical services, and harms federal workers. Some individuals may have their benefits delayed and business operations may be interrupted. Over 115,000 federal employees work in New York, ranging from healthcare workers to engineers to parks workers. The longer the shutdown drags on, the more families and businesses will suffer. Our economy is slowing down and prices are high. New Yorkers and all Americans deserve action to get government back up and running.”

The statement comes as concerns grow over delays in benefit payments and interruptions to business operations that could affect many people across the state. More than 115,000 federal employees in New York could face disruptions in their work due to the shutdown.

DiNapoli also noted that with an already slowing economy and rising prices, any additional strain caused by a government closure would only add to challenges faced by families and businesses.
