Stony Brook University’s Department of Music continues its initiative to make classical music more accessible through the ‘Art of the Violin’ program. Launched in 2015 by Artist-in-Residence Jennifer Frautschi, the series offers free, informal concerts in the Melville Library Galleria.

Frautschi, who has taught and performed at Stony Brook for over a decade, said the goal is to reach a broader audience outside traditional concert venues. The performances are open to anyone passing by or those who choose to attend specifically.

The concerts feature not only violins but also chamber ensembles with violas, cellos, basses, and occasionally piano or wind instruments. Frautschi described the experience as an opportunity for attendees to “give people a little break from everything else going on in the world and enjoy the power of music and live musical performance.” She added that it allows performers to connect with audiences in a more direct setting.

‘Art of the Violin’ events take place two or three times each semester during Campus Lifetime on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. The next scheduled performances are set for Wednesday, October 22, and Wednesday, November 12 at 1 pm.

Concert schedules for this series and other department events are available on the Music Department’s concert listings page (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/music/concerts-events/index.php). Updates can also be found on Instagram @stonybrookmusic.
