More than 150 faculty members at Stony Brook University were honored earlier this semester for achieving promotion, with 50 of them also receiving tenure. The annual Promotion and Tenure Celebration, now in its second year, recognized faculty who advanced to positions such as associate professor, associate clinical professor, associate librarian, full professor, full clinical professor, or full librarian.

The ceremony was jointly hosted by Carl W. Lejuez, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and William Wertheim, MD, Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine.

“If I could say one thing today, it’s to tell you to take a moment and celebrate this amazing accomplishment. We celebrate your research and scholarship and take inspiration from your commitment to mentoring and what you have done for your students,” said Lejuez. “We love to talk about rankings, but what makes Stony Brook special is the people and your commitment to collaboration, education, mentoring, and scholarship.”

Faculty members at Stony Brook University typically have seven years on the tenure track to demonstrate excellence in teaching, service to their discipline and the university or clinical service, and research or scholarship. This is shown through grants, peer-reviewed publications, books, and other creative works.

“Each of you is committed to pursue knowledge, to pursue wisdom and to pass it on to your students,” said Wertheim. “We are thrilled to have you as part of our vibrant academic community, not just for your ideas and not just for your innovation, but also for your commitment to doing the right things for the right reasons. I look forward to seeing how your work will continue to shape the future of our university and our broader communities.”
