The Stony Brook University Center for Italian Studies has rescheduled the 19th annual Robert D. Cess Concorso d’Eleganza Annual Celebration of Italian Vehicle Excellence and Beauty to Sunday, September 14. The event was originally planned for September 6 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
The car show is free and open to the public. It will be held from 10 am to 1 pm in Parking Lot 2, located off Circle Road near the Charles B. Wang Center and Tubman Hall at Stony Brook University.
The Concorso d’Eleganza is known among auto enthusiasts for showcasing “art forms on wheels” as a representation of Italian culture. Several Italian vehicle groups are expected to participate in this year’s event.
Established in 2006 by Mario Mignone, founder of the Center for Italian Studies, and SoMAS Distinguished Professor Robert (“Bob”) Cess, the show aims to connect the university with the local Italian and Italian American community through appreciation of classic automobiles. Professor Cess, who made significant contributions to atmospheric sciences and received NASA’s highest scientific honor—the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal—was passionate about restoring post-war Alfa Romeos. His interest in classic cars led him to collaborate with Mignone on organizing the first Concorso d’Eleganza on May 21, 2006.
