The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2023 Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), which include data on job creation and destruction, as well as establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns. The BDS offers an annual time series covering the years from 1978 to 2023.

According to the Census Bureau, the BDS data are accessible through their website, via the Census API, and in BDS Explorer. This tool allows users to interact with the dataset using line charts, bar charts, thematic maps, and customizable dashboards for organizing and comparing measures of business dynamics.

“Data are available on BDS, in the Census API and in BDS Explorer. The explorer tool provides access to the entire BDS dataset via line charts, bar charts and thematic maps. The application’s intuitive dashboard allows data users to construct tables and charts for comparing and organizing measures of business dynamics.”

The new release aims to provide a comprehensive view of business trends over several decades by aggregating information according to establishment and firm characteristics.

For more information about these statistics or how to use the tools provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, visit their official resources on BDS and BDS Explorer.
