Willa Smith has been named the new regional center director of the Stony Brook Small Business Development Center (SBDC). She takes over from Martha Stansbury, who previously led the SBDC and was recognized for her commitment to supporting small businesses in the region.
Smith is an experienced member of the New York Small Business Development Center (NYSBDC) network. Her background includes advising small businesses, managing portfolios, and fostering entrepreneurial development. She has contributed to helping both startups and established businesses secure financing, improve their operations, and pursue sustainable growth.
The Stony Brook SBDC operates as part of the NYSBDC network and offers confidential business advising, training, and research services at no cost to small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs on Long Island. The center works with partners such as the U.S. Small Business Administration, New York State, and local economic-development agencies to promote innovation and job creation across different sectors.
“Willa brings a strong record of leadership and a deep understanding of what it takes to help small businesses grow and thrive,” said Michael Kinch, Stony Brook University’s Chief Innovation Officer. “Her experience and vision will be instrumental in expanding the SBDC’s role as a driver of innovation and economic opportunity across our region.”
